چکیده

I t has been pointed out that HIV positive patients with a history of drug misuse are less likely to undergo antiretroviral therapy (ART) than those who belong to other categories of transmission. 2 Moreover, inadequate use of ART in injecting drug users (IDUs) is controversial because of the risk of parenteral and/or sexual transmission of drug resistant HIV variants. The aim of this study was to describe the frequency of use and cessation of antiretroviral regimens over a period characterised by the introduction of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) in Spain.

Drug-Resistant HIV-1 RT Gene Mutations in Patients under Treatment with Antiretroviral Drugs (HAART) in Iran

Abstract Background and Objective: Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy (HAART) can effectively prevent the progression of HIV-1 replication and increase life expectancy. There are numerous causes of treatment failure and the leading one is drug resistance. Thus, we aimed to determine the HIV RT gene drug resistance mutations in patients treated with antiretroviral medications. Material...

The need for treatment interruption studies and biomarker identification in the search for an HIV cure.

The evaluation of new therapies to achieve an antiretroviral therapy (ART)-free remission of HIV infection will require demonstration of efficacy through ART interruption studies. However, there are concerns about stopping ART, including patient safety, selection of HIV drug resistance and increased risk for HIV transmission. In this article, we highlight the importance of identifying biomarker...

Limited effect of highly active antiretroviral therapy among HIV-positive injecting drug users on the population level.

There is evidence that HIV-positive injecting drug users benefit less than other risk groups from highly active antiretroviral therapy that has been available since 1996. In this multicentre European study the impact of the availability of highly active antiretroviral therapy on the progression rates to AIDS and death among injecting drug users with a documented date of HIV seroconversion is st...

Political and Governance Challenges to Achieving Global HIV Goals with Injecting Drug Users: The Case of Pakistan

Background The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) has recently set the ambitious “90-90-90 target” of having 90% of people living with HIV (PLHIV) know their status, receive antiretroviral therapy (ART), and achieve viral suppression by 2020. This ambitious new goal is occurring in a context of global “scale-down” following nearly a decade of heightened investment in HIV ...

Nutritional Status, Serum Proteins, and Some Trace Elements in HIV Drug-Naive Patients on Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy

Background and Aims: This cross-sectional study examined the nutritional status, serum proteins, and some trace elements in human immunodeficiency viruses (HIV) drug-naive patients on highly active antiretroviral therapy. Material and Methods: Twenty-five drug-naive subjects, 25 subjects on highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART), and 20 control subjects aged 21 to 65 years were convenie...
